Teen Book Review – These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong

These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong

These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong was an absolute delight to read. The story follows rival gang
leaders who end up putting their past and differences aside to help stop the mysterious deaths that
have been occurring across Shanghai in the 1920’s. Chloe Gong absolutely nailed her description of the
setting, leaving in just enough detail without dragging it on for too long. I was drawn in from the start
and enjoyed reading about the characters and their dynamic. The 2 main characters we follow, Juliette
and Roma have an electric dynamic that keeps the reader on their toes. As the story progresses, we
learn more about their past and the events that lead up to their hatred towards one another, and this is
where the ‘Romeo & Juliet’ retelling that this story boasts of truly shines. The plot is well paced and
keeps you on the edge of your seat consistently. We get to explore different characters and getting
these perspectives only add to the mystery that the book entails. This book has all the elements you
could possibly be looking for in a historical, fictious, fantastical, Romeo & Juliet retelling, and will not fail
to keep you turning the page.
