For the 2021 tax season, Markham Public Library is taking part in The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP). The program is a collaborative partnership between the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), community organizations (such as Markham Public Library), and their volunteers. The library is hosting virtual free tax clinics where community volunteers (who may or may not be tax professionals) complete and file taxes for free BY PHONE. Only 2020 taxes will be filed, NO previous years will be processed.
Last day to fill out the form is Sunday, March 14, 2021.
In order to qualify for the CVITP, community members must have a modest income and simple tax situation.
Simple tax situation:
A simple tax situation is where an individual has no income or if their income comes from these sources:
- benefits, such as Canada Pension Plan, Old Age Security, disability insurance, employment insurance, and social assistance
- Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs)
- support payments
- scholarships, fellowships, bursaries, or grants
- interest (under $1,000)
See below for definition of modest total family income based on family size:
- 1 person - $35,000
- 2 people - $45,000
- 3 people - $47,500
- 4 people - $50,000
- 5 people - $52,000
Please note, during the phone appointment, volunteer may discontinue the session if the applicant does not meet the requirements.
