2021 marks the 50th anniversary of Markham Public Library (MPL). In 1971, Council enacted a bylaw that established a public library for the Town of Markham and brought together the libraries of Thornhill, Unionville and Markham under one organization. For the past 50 years, MPL has been dedicated to providing exceptional library services to the Markham community. With 8 locations across the City of Markham, MPL is now more than a place to borrow books. MPL is a community hub where Markham comes together to imagine, create, learn, and grow together.

To celebrate this exciting milestone, MPL is pleased to announce the launch of two new initiatives today.

Fine Free Program for Children and Teens

Starting today, children and teens will no longer be charged overdue fines for borrowed library materials. All existing fines will be waived as well.

Many studies have shown that fines discourage library use, cutting families off from accessing books and resources they need to support learning. MPL’s Fine Free Program removes a barrier to access and ensures that children and teens of all economic backgrounds can enjoy equal opportunities to learn and grow.

To qualify, customers will need to update their library card profile by contacting the Library by phone or via our Live Chat. For more information about MPL’s Fine Free Program, please check here.

MPL eCard

eCards are now available at MPL. Anyone who does not currently have a library card can now sign up for an eCard online from the safety and comfort of their own home. MPL eCards are environmentally-friendly and provide the same access to all of MPL’s digital collections, resources and virtual programs. Physical collections can also be accessed through curbside once customers validate their eCard. Those who already have a physical library card do not need to get an eCard.
