Celebrating Earth Day 2025

In 2025, Markham Public Library joins communities around the world to celebrate the 55th anniversary of Earth Day. Celebrated on April 22, Earth Day is a yearly reminder to live a sustainable lifestyle and to protect and appreciate the environment around us.

This year's global Earth Day theme, “Our Power, Our Planet”, highlights the importance of creating a global “renewable energy generation.” Renewable energy from sources such as water, wind, and sunlight can play a critical role in reducing greenhouse gas pollution and creating a more sustainable future.

In Canada, Earth Day Canada is focused on a theme of biodiversity in 2025. According to Earth Day Canada, “nearly three-quarters of the Canadian population cannot define biodiversity or understand how to act to preserve it.” For Earth Day this year, Earth Day Canada is encouraging individuals to discover their local communities and to learn about the importance of "preserving biodiversity for ecosystem balance, food security, and resilience to climate change."
