November marks the celebration of Hindu Heritage Month. Hindu Heritage Month was first declared in Ontario in 2016 and nationally in 2022.
Throughout Hindu Heritage Month, we celebrate the richness of Hindu cultural traditions and the significant contributions of Hindu Canadians across industries such as science, art, medicine, business, education, politics, athletics and much more. Hindu Heritage Month recognizes the past and ongoing impact of the Hindu community in Markham and across the country.
Diwali
Taking place during Hindu Heritage Month is Diwali or Deepavali, also known as the Festival of Lights. Diwali is celebrated by members of the Hindu, Jain, Sikh, and Buddhist communities around the world. Diwali is observed on the 15th day of Kartik on the Hindu lunar calendar which typically takes place in either October or November. This year, in 2024, depending on the country of celebration, it will be observed on either October 31st or November 1st.
Diwali commemorates the victory of good over evil or light over darkness and is celebrated across five days of celebrations. While different regions and cultures have varying customs for Diwali, it is a time to celebrate and gather with friends and family.
