March is recognized as Persian Heritage Month in Ontario, a time to celebrate the rich history, culture, and contributions of people from the Persian heritage to our communities. In 2021, Ontario took an important step in recognizing the rich culture and contributions of the Persian community by enacting Bill 271. Persian Heritage Month is an opportunity to recognize the valuable contributions of the Persian-Canadian community in Ontario’s social, economic, and cultural landscape. It provides an opportunity to celebrate the diverse aspects of Persian culture, including its art, science, literature, music, cuisine, and much more.
Persian Heritage Month coincides with Nowruz which is one of the most significant celebrations within Persian culture. Nowruz, also known as the Persian New Year, marks the beginning of spring. Nowruz usually falls on March 20 or 21 and lasts for a duration of 13 days. In 2026, Nowruz begins on March 20. Nowruz includes popular traditions like setting up the Haft-Seen table with seven symbolic items starting with the letter “S”, Khaneh Tekani also known as ‘shaking the house’ is spring cleaning to welcome the new year, exchanging gifts, visiting family and enjoying traditional meals. Nowruz is also a time of celebration for many Persian communities around the world.
On the 1st Thursday of every month (i.e., March 5, April 2, May 7 etc.), Markham Public Library offers a Persian Storytime which features a fun-filled session of Persian songs and stories. This program provides your child the opportunity to develop early literacy and language skills. We look forward to having your family join us!
