If you're new to Canada and English isn't your first language, you'll likely need to take an English proficiency test to assist your academic admissions, Express Entry immigration, professional applications, as well as work permits and visas. Two common tests for this are IELTS (International English Language Testing System) and TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language).
IELTS is a standardized and commonly used test for study, work, and migration purposes in English-speaking countries like the UK, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. IELTS test results are widely accepted throughout Canada for immigration and post-secondary admission purposes. The test consists of four sections: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Test scoring is on a scale of 1-9, with 9 being the highest proficiency level.
TOEFL is another standardized test used for admissions to universities and colleges in English-speaking countries. TOEFL test results are largely used in United States but are also accepted by some institutions in Canada. Similar to IELTS, TOEFL test reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Scoring is completed on a scale of 0 -120.
