Roles and Responsibilities of the Provincial Government

       The provincial government plays an important role in the delivery of public services that lead to the improvement of the people who live, work and play in the area that they are responsible for governing. The delivery of these services is done by creating policies and laws to meet these goals. For instance, some of the areas of responsibility the provincial government is responsible for includes: 

• Healthcare:  The delivery of healthcare services as well as providing resources and funds for health care programs (i.e., building hospitals) 
• Education: Setting standards for public education programs where the Ministry of Education outlines the curriculum expectations (i.e., JK to Highschool) and resources/funding 
• Infrastructure Development: Resources and funding to help with supporting the growth of cities and towns within the province of Ontario by improving large infrastructure projects such as: overseeing construction and road maintenance (e.g., highways), public transit (i.e., Metrolinx) 
• Economic Development:  Creation of policies and programs to promote and provide assistance to improve and attract business growth, job creation, and regional development (i.e., promoting tourism)

       The provincial government collaborates with its municipal and federal government partners to address broader national issues, while also advocating for the interests of the province.  Understanding the role and importance of the provincial governments helps citizens engage more meaningfully in the political process and provides opportunities for them to share their perspectives on various issues.
