Looking for a fun way to stay motivated and explore great new books?
Join the MPL Reading Challenges! We offer different challenges for every age group—from kids to teens to adults—so everyone can read in a way that fits their interests. Reading helps spark creativity, build knowledge, and can be a great way to relax. To make things even more fun, we also offer prizes for our Adult, Kids, and Read It Your Way challenges. Discover your next favourite read and enjoy reading all year long!
Getting Started
To join the challenge, simply download the Beanstack App, where you’ll track your reading, complete activities, and earn virtual tickets for prize draws.
Physical Bingo Cards are also available at the branches. For information on how to use physical cards, please check with our staff.
How it works
1. To participate in MPL's reading challenges, you must first download the Beanstack app (and search for Markham Public Library) or visit MPL's Beanstack Page. After you have the app, simply create an account for yourself or members of your family.
2. Sign up for the reading challenge of your choice in the Beanstack app. Complete the various challenges on the Bingo Card to earn virtual tickets.
3. Submit your tickets in Beanstack for a chance to win prizes. For physical Bingo Cards, please ask our staff for information on how to participate.
Adult Reading Challenge
Get cozy with a good book this winter and explore new authors, genres, and stories. Complete the activities on your digital bingo card in Beanstack to earn virtual ballots. The more squares you complete, the more chances you have to win a $20 gift card. Simply find the Adult Reading Challenge on the Beanstack app to get started.
Kids Reading Challenge (Grades 1–3)
Support your child’s reading journey with fun, achievable goals! Kids earn digital badges in Beanstack as they log books and complete activities—building confidence and improving literacy skills. Each badge earns virtual tickets for a chance to win a $20 gift card. Kids are also invited to join our in-branch meetups happening in January to meet other young book lovers.
Read it Your Way
Welcome to 2026! The new year brings a new reading challenge that celebrates your reading freedom. No matter how you read—whether by turning pages, swiping a screen, or listening with your ears—this is your year to enjoy books on your own terms. Start reading today and earn badges all year long. To complete this challenge finish reading 25 books of your choice for a chance to win a $20 e-gift card. Complete additional monthly challenges just for fun!
1000 Books Before Kindergarten
Building literacy from an early age is key to lifelong learning! Join MPL’s 1000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge and read with your little one. When they reach 1,000 books, they’ll earn a special certificate from MPL to celebrate their achievement.
