Markham Public Library is Going Cashless in 2026

Starting January 1, 2026, Markham Public Library (MPL) will move to a fully cashless payment system.

This means all payments for library services—such as printing, copying, fines, and program fees—will be made through debit, credit, or other electronic methods.

Why Are We Going Cashless?

Over time Canadians have increasingly shifted toward digital payments and MPL has seen a decline in cash transactions. Moving to a cashless model helps us better serve the community while enhancing safety and efficiency.

What this Means for You

From January 1, 2026, cash will no longer be accepted at any MPL location. We will continue to offer a variety of convenient payment options including:

  • Debit and credit cards
  • Contactless payments (Apple Pay, Google Pay, etc.)
  • City of Markham gift certificate purchased through Xplor

The library has online payment options, through a secure payment system, which can be made by credit card.  There is a minimum online payment of $2.
