Celebrating International Trails Day 2025!

International Trails Day is celebrated on the first Saturday of June each year to encourage everyone to discover the trails around them. The day also serves as a reminder to take care of the trails that we visit so that they can be preserved for future generations.

Whether you are hiking, running, cycling, or discovering new flora and fauna on a trail, spending time outdoors can help to promote better physical and mental health!

Here are a few ways for you to celebrate International Trails Day this year:

  • Check out MPL's trail collection which includes everything from binoculars to hiking poles.
  • Explore a new trail or bring a friend or family member to visit one of your favourite trails! Discover different trails in Markham by using sites like AllTrails which provides information about trails such as the trail's difficulty, length, and estimated time of completion as well as providing user-generated tips and reviews for each trail. Blogs such as Ontario Hiking also provide reviews of trails throughout the province, including many in the Greater Toronto Area
  • Connect with others at an Ontario Trails Council event. Whether you are hiking, cycling, canoeing, rock climbing, looking for a garden tour or joining a star gazing event, there is something for everyone!
  • Learn about the Trans Canada Trail! The Trans Canada Trail is the longest multi-use trail system in the world and connects every province and territory across Canada!
  • Help take care of our trails! Look for a tree planting program or litter cleanup in your community to help keep our trails healthy for future generations:
    • Groups such as 10,000 Trees are working to plant trees throughout the Rouge Valley, including in locations such as Rouge National Urban Park. Join them as a volunteer and help out with everything from tree planting to event operations and registration.
    • Learn about how you can organize a local litter cleanup in York Region.
  • Support conservation work while contributing to a community science project by documenting the plants and animals you see using apps such as iNaturalist or eBird
