5 Ways to Save Money This Summer

Summer is a time for creating memories; however, between vacations, activities and rising food costs, it is easy for budgets to feel stretched. Here are a few strategies to help you enjoy everything summer has to offer while keeping things affordable.

1. Explore Discounts to Attractions

  • The Canada Strong Pass offered by the Government of Canada is available from June 19 to September 7, 2026. This pass makes it less expensive to explore Canada by offering free admission and discounts to various participating attractions and services. For example,  with this pass there is free admission to Parks Canada. Also, for children/youth 17 years and under there is free admission to museums/galleries.
  • Attractions Ontario  also offers a wide selection of discounts to various places such as 1000 Islands, Bird Kingdom, Discovery Harbour and much more.

Money-saving tip: Check each attraction’s website as they might have special discounts during specific times/dates.

2. Take Advantage of Free Local Events/Activities

Before purchasing tickets to expensive attractions, check out what's happening in your community. Many municipalities, cultural organizations, and libraries offer free concerts, outdoor movie nights, festivals, workshops, programs and family activities throughout the summer.

Using free community events can help you stay entertained while supporting local organizations and discovering new experiences close to home. For instance, the City of Markham offers free fitness sessions  and the Markham Museum offers free weekly outdoor movie experiences. Also, Markham Public Library offers a wide selection of free programs such as the Mini-Makers and activities for Summer Reading Club

Money-saving tip: To explore various events/activities, you may want to create a family "summer bucket list" filled with free community events and aim to attend one each week (depending on your schedule or your family’s schedule).

2. Borrow Instead of Buy

Summer often inspires us to pick up new hobbies, tackle DIY projects, or plan road trips. Before purchasing books, movies, audiobooks, magazines, board games, or even specialty equipment, see what you can borrow. Markham Public Library is the perfect place to visit because in addition to books there is a large collection of items you can borrow including toys, special equipment from the lendery, music instruments, and so much more (i.e., bicycles, etc).

Money-saving tip: Challenge yourself to borrow every book you read this summer instead of purchasing new copies and check out one item from our unique collections mentioned above.

4. Plan Meals and Eat More at Home

Planning meals ahead of time, making use of seasonal produce, and preparing snacks before heading out can significantly reduce spending. Consider looking at weekly flyers for items on sale can significantly reduce your spendings. For more cooking ideas, explore MPL’s PressReader e-resource as there are a variety of food/cooking magazines or MPL’s collection of cookbooks

Money-saving tip: Pack reusable water bottles and snacks for outings.

5. Use Free Digital Resources

Many people are surprised to learn how many free digital resources are available through their library card. E-books, audiobooks, online learning platforms, digital magazines, language-learning tools, and streaming content can help you stay entertained and continue learning throughout the summer. For instance MPL offers a wide select of resources to support your learning, interest in music/movies and has an excellent collection of e-resources for children

Whether you're looking to develop a new skill, enjoy a bestselling novel, or keep children engaged during school breaks, these resources can save both money and time.

Money-saving tip: Explore your library's digital collection before subscribing to a new streaming service or online course.
