Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month

April is Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month. This month is all about learning what autism is, understanding how autistic people experience the world, and making sure everyone feels included and respected.

Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism spectrum disorder refers to a range of neurodevelopmental conditions that impact how an individual perceives and interacts with the world.  Autistic people may communicate in different ways, prefer routines and have strong interests they love to share, etc. There is no “one-size-fits-all” definition of autism as each individual is unique and that is one of the reasons why it is important to recognize the spectrum.

For families and individuals, autism is a lifelong journey. It is essential to understand that while there may be challenges, autistic individuals also possess unique viewpoints, talents and skills that enrich the communities they belong to. Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month is about embracing the richness of diversity that autism brings.

Why Focus on Both Awareness and Acceptance?

Awareness is crucial because it informs and educates people about what autism is, how it affects individuals, and the hurdles autistic individuals may encounter in society. However, awareness alone is not enough. True change is only possible if we move beyond simply knowing about autism to actively embracing the unique talents of autistic individuals in our communities.

Acceptance means acknowledging autistic individuals for who they are, without judgment and understanding their challenges while also valuing their unique qualities. When we accept others, we help create a world where everyone feels safe and valued.

How can the library support?

At Markham Public Library, we recently hosted a Neurodiversity Resource Fair which featured various organizations to support our neurodiverse members in our community. In addition, in our library branches, we offer:

  • Various programs for families
  • A Sensory pop-up
  • Sensory storytimes
  • Sensory toys

Let’s Choose Acceptance All Year Long

Although April is a time to learn about autism, acceptance shouldn’t stop when the month ends. It is important that we continue to be understanding and inclusive every single day. When we do, we help build a community where everyone can be themselves and shine.
