Celebrate Pride Month Across York Region!

The start of June means the start of Pride Month, a time to celebrate love, diversity, and the vibrant 2SLGBTQ+ community. This year, there are a number of exciting events happening all across York Region in celebration of Pride. Here's a roundup of some key events you won't want to miss.

Challenging Queer Disinformation

On Tuesday, June 11th, in collaboration with PFLAG York Region, the public libraries of King, Markham, Newmarket, and Richmond Hill are hosting a virtual information session on challenging Queer disinformation. With a recent resurgence of transphobic and other anti-LGBTQ2+ rhetoric and policy-making across the country, this workshop will explore how we confront sources of disinformation and consume today's news content.

Sparking Night

On Friday, June 14th, at the Newmarket Riverwalk Commons, York Pride is organizing a large celebration to kick-start the parade weekend. Sparking Night will take place from 6-10 PM and will feature a fashion show and live performances from Ontario-based queer and allied artists. The show is free to attend, but the maximum capacity is 1000 attendees—arrive early to secure a spot. This year, Sparking Night will also start with York Region's first-ever Trans March at 6 PM.

York Region Pride Parade

On Saturday, June 15th, York Pride will host its 10th annual York Region Pride Parade! The parade will start at 3 PM from Heritage Main Street between Queens Street and end on Water Street. If you're looking to spend a day in Newmarket before or after the parade, head to Riverwalk Commons from 10 AM - 10 PM, where you can watch live performances, explore craft vendors, and connect with affirming community organizations.

Family Pride Night

On Wednesday, June 26th, Markham Public Library will be hosting a Family Pride Night celebration at the Milliken Mills Branch. Planned activities include button making, a photobooth, a rainbow storytime, and a resource fair with local 2SLGBTQ+ organizations.
