How can I choose dyslexia friendly books for my child?
Not everyone experiences dyslexia the same way which can make it challenging for you to help your child in developing their skills and confidence in reading. Here are some options offered by MPL to support your child’s reading journey.
- Audiobooks allow people with dyslexia to engage with books while overcoming reading challenges. MPL offers audiobooks in a variety of formats to support reading preferences and accessibility needs. Formats include Playaways (preloaded audio book players), children’s picture books, audiobooks on CD, and eAudiobooks
- Large Print books have larger font and increased white space between lines which helps readers decode and track text leading to improved comprehension.
- Our OverDrive collection of eBooks offer accessible layouts including text size, font choices, and line spacing that stop the page from becoming overcrowded. These are the instructions for turning on dyslexic-friendly font in the Libby reading app.
- The pictures in graphic novels help readers understand the story and focus on meaning - making them more accessible and enjoyable for readers with dyslexia.
- The Centre for Equitable Library Access (CELA) offers a wide variety of books in accessible formats, for free, to those with print disabilities including dyslexia. With your MPL card you can sign up with CELA and start borrowing.
