Celebrate Lunar New Year

Celebrating Lunar New Year

Lunar New Year is a special time of the year as it marks the first new moon of the lunar calendar which varies slightly each year and usually falls between late January and mid‑February. Typically, Lunar New Year runs for 15 days. In 2026, the Year of the Horse begins on February 17. This celebration ushers in a season of renewal, reflection, and joyful gathering for many people.

Common Traditions

Although many cultures around the world celebrate Lunar New Year in slightly different ways, typically it is a significant time to represent new beginnings and good fortune. Several days before the start of the New Year, families prepare by cleaning their homes to sweep away bad  luck that might be lingering inside and decorate their homes with bright red banners for good fortune.

The celebration begins on New Year’s Eve when family members gather together for festive meals with food symbolizing prosperity, longevity, and wealth to usher in a fortunate year ahead. Dumplings for prosperity, long noodles for longevity, fish for abundance and sweet rice cakes to represent a more successful year ahead are just a few popular dishes.

Traditions That Bring Communities Together

Lunar New Year is as much about community as it is about culture. In various parts of the world, lion dances fill the streets with the sound of drums and cymbals. Other traditions usually include elders giving red envelopes known as hongbao or lai see to children and unmarried younger family members to symbolize the passing of good luck and prosperity. Usually, there are red lanterns placed on trees, in doorways, in homes to represent vitality and present good luck to a prosperous year ahead.
