Calling All Aspiring Filmmakers in Markham!
As part of Digital Innovation Month in October, MPL is excited to bring back our 2-Minute Short Film Festival, happening Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at Markham Village Library. This is your chance to showcase your creativity, storytelling, and filmmaking skills!
How to Participate:
To enter the competition, filmmakers must meet the following criteria:
- Have a valid Markham Public Library card
- Submit one original short film (maximum 2 minutes in length)
- Films must be created during August-October 2026
- There is no theme this year! However, content must be filmed within the City of Markham / If animated, the animation must have the City of Markham in the backdrop or in the plot.
- Any genre is welcome (excluding excessive violence, sexual content, strong language, or hate speech)
- No copyrighted music, footage, or content
Key Dates:
- Submissions Open: Tuesday, August 4, 2026
- Last Day to Submit: Monday October 12th, 2026 by Midnight
- Pre-Screening Voting Period: Tuesday October 13-20th, 2026
- Film Festival Event: Wednesday, October 28th, 2026| 6 – 8 PM

What Happens Next:
A small group of pre-screeners will review submissions and select the Top 10 films. These selected entries will be showcased at the Markham Village Film Festival, where a panel of judges will vote live to determine the winning film.
This is a great opportunity for local creatives to get their work seen, celebrated, and appreciated by the community. Whether your film is dramatic, funny, abstract, or heartfelt, we want to see it!

There will be free popcorn, chips and snacks and more importantly, you get to vote on your favourite film!
