Tips on Writing A Memoir

Memoirs are works of non-fiction that are about the author’s own life. Usually, memoirs have a strong theme or an important lesson. Here are 5 key tips to help you write your memoir:

  1. Pick an interesting moment in your life to write about
    • A memoir doesn't need to cover your entire life, it would go on forever! Think of a time in your life that was exciting, busy, or even messy.
  2. Start with an outline
    •  Just like a fiction story, your memoir should have a beginning, middle and end. This makes it easy for your readers to follow along. Keeping an organized outline will make it easier once you start writing. Don't worry, you can always change up your plan as you go along.
  3. Show, don't tell
    • This is a handy tip for writers everywhere! Instead of saying "I was scared", describe what that looks like. Mention how your hands trembled, your heart pounded, and you were frozen in place. See how that sounded better?
  4. Be honest
    • A memoir is about your own, real experiences, that's what makes it unique and relatable. Keep everything honest and focus on moments that really happened. It would be cool to write about dragons and aliens, but save those ideas for a fiction story.
  5. Edit your work
    • Even the best authors didn't publish their first draft. Read through your memoir, read it out loud, and find someone you trust to look over it with a fresh set of eyes.
