Discover Skilled Trades Opportunities: Library and Community Resources in York Region

Did you know that there are more than 300 designated skilled trades to choose from in Canada?

According to the Government of Canada, more than 222,000 Real Seal certified skilled trades workers are needed over the next four years to meet national demand. The top five most in-demand skilled trades in Ontario are carpenter, cook, painter and decorator, refrigeration and air conditioning mechanic, and welder. Skilled trades are highly sought after in the Canadian job market, and if you are interested in learning more or thinking of having a career in one of the many trades-  then this blog is for you! Below, we will highlight four resources at Markham Public Library to help you kick-start your research in a trade career that you like. Bonus: we will also share four community resources on skilled trades that you won't want to miss, and yes- you really don't want to miss them! 

1. Browse Our Books and Collections!

We have a range of skilled trade safety and code handbooks available at Markham Public Library, such as the electrical safety handbooks and the Canadian Electrical Code handbook. Here is a curated skilled trade handbooks list - feel free to use our catalogue search to find more titles.

2. Leverage Online Learning Tools for Skilled Trades! 

Markham Library offers free online learning platforms like Udemy, Learning Hub, and LearningExpress Library Canada, to build foundational skills (e.g., computer literacy, math, reading documents) - all useful in many trades.

  • Udemy features online courses in cybersecurity, IT, business, and entrepreneurship—great for tradespeople who want to start their own business.

  • Learning Hub includes apprenticeship-oriented courses covering topics like construction measurement methods and apprenticeship math. It even offers courses exploring apprenticeship options.

  • LearningExpress Library Canada provides career prep, TOEIC and TOEFL tests, GED prep, and college admission exam resources (ACT, SAT, AP, and more).

At Markham Public Library, we offer free job search and career tools to help individuals craft strong resumes, cover letters, and learn outstanding interview techniques. 4. Stay Updated on Industry Trends with Our Digital Database!

Whether you are a seasoned trades professional or just starting out, our updated digital databases on various industries will help you stay informed on the latest trends and developments. Community Resources

Outside of the library, there are many local non-profits and organizations that offer free pathways to various skilled trades apprenticeships and jobs. Below are a few mentions:

  • The Level Up skilled Trades Career Fairs is happening at various cities across Ontario from September to December, and the closest cities from York Region would be at Oshawa on November 19 at Tribute Communities Centre, and Mississauga on November 26-27 at The International Centre.   • Apprentice Search is a great job searching website to look for skilled trade jobs and apprenticeship opportunities. They also have many online programs introducing various skilled trade industries and the pathways to get certify. Check out their website here
  • Access Employment offers a number of sector-specific bridging programs that support internationally-trained professionals to find work in their field that reflects their past experience. Bridging careers include agricultural, biomanufacturing, constructions and more. They also help those that are in the pre-arrival stage and still in their home country. Check out their website here
  • If you are interested in the agricultural-tech industry, STEM MINDS and Boreal Farms are expanding their AgriTech and AgriFood programs might have something for you. From now through March 2026, their new training platform helps current and future jobseekers gain essential skills for Ontario’s growing AgriFood sector, which employs 1 in 8 Ontarians. Developed with industry and academic partners, the programs feature nine learning streams aligned with key roles and innovations across the AgriFood value chain. Visit their website here
