MPL Short Film Contest
Calling all storytellers, filmmakers and creative minds! Enter MPL’s 2nd Annual 2-Minute Short Film Festival for your chance to have your film showcased at the MPL Film Festival.
The top 10 films selected by our pre-screening team will be screened at the MPL Film Festival on October 28, where our panel of judges will crown the winning film live!
Screening Day
MPL is rolling out the red carpet for its first-ever 2-Minute Short Film Competition, and you're invited to be part of the action! Whether you like drama, action, horror or documentaries - The Markham Village Film Festival will have you entertained as 10 of the best-chosen films will be screened to a live judging panel where they will determine the best short film in 2026.

Founder,PI
Darren Soo is a Canadian technology founder and creator of PI, an individualized AI reasoning framework designed to help people reason through complex, changing information over time. His background spans more than two decades of practical technology work across enterprise and operational software environments. His current work centres on artificial intelligence, machine learning, and explainable reasoning systems, while his broader interests include how technology can support curiosity, better questions, learning and decision-making.

Writer, editor, library worker
Joseph Donato is a Queer writer, editor, and library worker. He has completed his MFA in Creative Writing at the University of Guelph, and his most recent poetry chapbook, No One Should Be Happy When I'm Not was published in 2026. Joseph's poems have appeared in The Ampersand Review, Pinhole Magazine, and more. He enjoys dad rock, money, and being afraid. He can be found @josephdonato13 on Instagram or josephdonato.ca.
