Between the Lines: Writing Contest

Calling all children writers! We are running our second annual Between the Lines Writing Contest for the whole month of November. This contest is open for children from Kindergarten to Grade 8 that want to share their stories.

Theme for your stories:
Write your own Mythical Tale. This can be a story with a mythical creature (for example a dragon as 2024 is the year of the dragon) or a tale that is like your own fairytale or legend.

If you are having trouble with your inspiration for your tale, try to imagine what would happen after your favourite fairytale story ends and write your tale from there!

There are four age range categories and here are the details:

  • Kindergarten to Grade 1: November also is Picture Book Month. Draw a picture with a 2-4 sentence story describing the scene below it. The sentences can be done with assistance of an adult.
  • Grades 2 to 3: Write a short story with up to 100 words
  • Grades 4 to 6: Write a short story with up to 200 words
  • Grades 7 to 8: Write a short story with up to 300 words
  • These are guidelines, if you choose you can write more (within reason) than required.

Deadline for submission: Submit your entry online or please bring in your submission to one of our library locations between Friday, November 1 and Monday, December 2, 2024. For all submissions, please make sure that they are in an easy-to-read format and is on letter-sized paper (8 ½” X 11”)/ document.
