Caring for Our Minds: Mental Illness Awareness Week at Markham Public Library

Each October, Mental Illness Awareness Week  (Oct 5-11) invites us to pause, reflect, and talk openly about mental health. It’s a reminder that caring for our minds is an important part of caring for ourselves and that no one should have to do it alone.

At Markham Public Library, we’re proud to be part of a community that values empathy, inclusion, and connection. Our branches offer more than books — all 8 are safe, welcoming spaces where everyone is invited to  slow down, read, reflect, and take a quiet moment for themselves. Whether you’re looking for information, inspiration, or simply a calm place to recharge, the library is here for you.

Throughout the year, Markham Public Library offers wellness-focused programs that promote mental well-being. From meditation and yoga sessions to creative workshops and art-based programs, these programs help people connect, de-stress, and express themselves. We also work with community partners to share information about local supports and mental health services available across Markham and York Region.

If you’re looking to learn more, we offer free access to books, eBooks, and online resources on topics like mental health, mindfulness, and self-care. You can also take part in meetups, workshops, and hands-on learning opportunities — from sewing classes and Cricut sticker-making to board game nights — all designed to spark curiosity, build confidence, and remind us that learning something new can be a great way to boost mental well-being.

This Mental Illness Awareness Week, take a moment to visit one of Markham Public Library’s eight branches or explore our online resources. Whether you’re looking to learn, connect, or simply find a quiet corner to unwind, MPL is here to support you. Together, we can build a community where mental health is understood, supported, and never faced alone.
